Laura Smithies is an Environmental Professional with over 30 years of experience serving the mining, oil, and gas industries. She has worked on mining projects as a consultant since 2018 providing the experience gained as an environmental professional in the mining industry. Laura has held roles of Permitting Specialist and Discipline Lead for federal, provincial environmental assessments and federal permitting (Fisheries Act and Metal Mining Effluent Regulations, Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEAA 2012). Example mine permitting experience includes Teck’s Harmer Dam Project, KGHM Ajax project; North American Tungsten Cantung Tailings Water Treatment project; owner’s representative for Eskay Creek Mine as permitting and regulatory lead; Suncor Energy Hazardous Waste and Landfill facilities permitting, and; Snip Gold Mine Closure and Reclamation Plan. She has specific regulatory experience with Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA 2012), Canadian Fisheries Act (Fisheries Protection and Pollution Prevention), Navigation Protection Act, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act. Laura has also worked on several provincial level regulatory authorities in British Columbia including joint applications under BC Mines Act and Environmental Management Act. Laura has a Bachelor of Science degree from Lethbridge University and is a registered Environmental Professional with ECO Canada specializing in Environmental Management, Waste Management, Site Assessment and Reclamation and Water Quality.
