The Growing Influence of Indigenous Leadership in Energy

By Claire Harris, Principal – Eastern Canada, Project Realization

This month, I’ll return to the Atlantic Indigenous-Led Energy Symposium for my fifth year, a gathering that I’ve watched grow into something truly remarkable.

I remember the early days, when I was working on the Advanced Reactor Development Program and the Symposium brought together about 40 people. This year, attendance is expected to top 400 participants.

That growth tells an important story.

Across Atlantic Canada and beyond, Indigenous Nations and communities are playing an increasingly influential role in shaping the future of energy and major project development. The conversations have evolved, participation has broadened and there is growing recognition that meaningful Indigenous involvement is not simply one component of advancing projects, it is fundamental to how successful projects move forward.

This year will also be especially meaningful for me as I attend in my new role as Principal, Eastern Canada with Falkirk.

I’ll have the privilege of moderating Sister Hour: Indigenous Leadership at Decision-Making Tables a conversation between two powerhouse leaders, Tracy Primeau and Tabatha Bull. I’m expecting a candid, energetic and insightful discussion about leadership, experience and the opportunities ahead.

Falkirk’s own Christy Smith, VP of Indigenous Interests & Community Well-Being, will also be “Spilling the Tea” with a Chief Emeritus Emily Whetung-MacInnes, VP of Indigenous Partnerships at OPG.

These are exactly the kinds of conversations that make the Symposium valuable. Bringing Indigenous leaders, industry, governments and project proponents together creates space not only to talk about what meaningful participation should look like, but to learn from the people already putting it into practice.

As Canada looks to advance new energy and infrastructure projects, strong relationships and meaningful Indigenous inclusion will be central to advancing opportunities with respect for Indigenous sovereignty.

We’ll have a strong Falkirk team at the Symposium, including Founder Mike McPhie; VP Project Realization Katie Shaw; Head of Public Policy and Government Relations Jon Robinson; Christy; and me.

If you’re attending, come see us at Falkirk Booth #17. We’d love to hear what you’re working on and continue the conversation about Indigenous leadership, relationships and project realization.

Five years. From 40 people to more than 400. I’m looking forward to seeing what conversations and opportunities emerge from this year’s gathering.
