The Role

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced level professional to join the growing Water Stewardship Group at Falkirk
Environmental Consultants Ltd. The position comes with the flexibility of working remotely, includes a competitive remuneration package, and offers a unique career growth opportunity.

We are seeking a motivated individual with strong technical skills, is flexible, and works well independently or in a small team environment to fill the full-time position of Water Quality Specialist/Scientist/Engineer. In this role, you will report directly to
Falkirk’s Water Stewardship Practice Lead.

As a developing professional, your role will include:

  • Participating in a team environment, working closely with and supporting Falkirk’s Senior Water Quality Scientist, Water

Modelling Team, and Water Stewardship Practice Lead;

  • Design and lead water quality monitoring programs and studies.
  • Participating in the surface water components of resource projects, including baseline studies, effects assessments, conceptual water management plans and compliance monitoring reports;
  • Preparing high-quality presentations to share and communicate assessment results, including the use of data visualization tools;
  • Developing high-quality written technical reports in support of regulatory and permit management assignments;
  • Keeping abreast of changes to Canadian federal and provincial water quality guidelines and impact assessment legislation and practices, as relevant to the water practice;
  • Supporting the delivery of multiple projects within scope/budget/schedule expectations and apply high quality standards on project deliverables; and
  • Supporting preparation of workplans and proposals, including development of scopes and cost estimates.

 

Qualifications
For this position, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

Academic and Professional Credentials

  • A minimum of 3 to 7 years of direct experience in water quality monitoring and assessment projects, preferably in the consulting industry or the natural resources sector;
  • Registered Professional (e.g., P.Chem, P. Bio., P.Geo) or eligible for a professional designation in the near future;
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in chemistry, environmental, or biological sciences, or related field, from an accredited institution;

 

Essential Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of federal and provincial guidelines and regulatory requirements for surface water, effluent, and drinking water (e.g., BC ENV and CCME);
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and leading water quality field programs and studies;
  • Demonstrated experience managing large datasets, analyzing and interpreting water quality data, interpreting and assessing water quality model projections.
  • Data analysis and statistical techniques while working with large environmental datasets;
  • Excellent analytical skills in report writing and spreadsheet management to ensure reports are accurate and complete;
  • Adaptable and possess an ability to manage time and resources effectively;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and critical thinking skills;
  • An understanding of mining and mining-related environmental effects;
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and work in the field on projects as needed; and
  • A valid driver’s license.

 

Desirable Qualifications (considered a strong asset)

  • Experience with a range of environmental database software
  • Experience with GIS software
  • Experience with 3D data visualization tools
  • Direct experience working in the mining/resource sector;
  • Programming knowledge (e.g., R, Python, C, VBA), including the development of code for water quality assessments or software;
  • Direct experience working on water quality management for natural resource projects, such as mining, oil and gas, and/or renewable energy;
  • Experience communicating the results of water-related technical studies (e.g., with stakeholder technical review teams and First Nations, provincial/territorial regulators, and the scientific/engineering community);
  • Basic knowledge of Canadian or provincial/territorial environmental impact assessment legislation and regulations

(i.e., Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012) related to water quality; and

  • Project management experience.
